Hello campus community:(校园社区你们好:)
It is expected that the constant stream of information and news reports about swine flu can lead to increased levels of anxiety for any person.
These reactions are typical, especially if there are some uncertainties about the spread and severity of the disease. However, there are several steps that we would like to encourage you to take to manage those feelings and maintain a positive outlook.
1. Please get the facts! A credible source is news from the U.S. Center for Disease Control (http://cdc.gov/swineflu/)
2. Avoid assumptions and rumors from speculators. This can add to feelings of anxiety and despair.
3. Keep things in perspective: What is being said about treatment available for those who do acquire the disease, and what prevention strategies are you aware of or that you are able to practice?
4. Maintain an optimistic outlook. Get updated information, but limit worry and agitation by lessening the time you spend watching for a prolonged period or listening to upsetting media coverage.
5. Stay healthy! Proper diet and exercise, and the practice of hygienic practices are your best defenses against many disease threats.
6. Increase your resilience. A professor said it best today: “I will also suggest drink plenty of fluid ( water preferred) , prime up your immune system with vitamin C, stay home if you show flu-like symptoms and get flu-vaccination if you are at high risk.”
7. Work on a plan. Think about how you might respond if this disease were discovered in your area. Working out some scenarios in advance can lessen your anxiety.
8. Get help! If you are having uncontrollable feelings of anxiety, trouble performing at work or other activities because of preoccupation with this news, please get help. Talk to someone about it and seek out the level of counsel that may be appropriate for you.
