A person claims to be the young women detained but later released by Toronto Police in connection with the murder of Cecilia Zhang says she doesn’t think her friend, Min Chen, is the killer.
The young woman, who doesn’t reveal her name, issued a statement in Chinese through a Toronto-based Chinese web site, 51.ca, used by Zhang’s family to communicate with the Chinese community. She says on an online message board that she was shocked to learn Chen might be the killer.
“The Min Chen I know is a very kind person”, said the message’s author, whose identity could not be confirmed.
“I would have never imagined that he would be responsible for this tragedy.”
The writer said she knew Chen for almost three years and had always treated him as if he were her younger brother.
She also said her former landlords, Sherry Xu and Raymond Zhang, treated her very well.
“[Raymond and Sherry] often asked me to dine with them”, the statement said. “In summer, they would take me and other girls in the house to go fishing in the countryside.”
Cici was the name the young woman used to refer to the 9-year-old victim in her statement. She said she and Cecilia “were like sisters.”
“I often took her home from the school; I prepared food for her to eat; we watched TV together. Our relationship was like what you saw in the movies, that two sister enjoy their time spending together”, the young woman said.
She said, since the Zhangs treated her so well, when she brought home guests she would introduce them to her landlords.
She admitted that she introduced Chen to Cecilia. The young woman said she had never thought his relationship with her landlord’s daughter should be a cause for concer.
“If it weren’t for me, Cici and Min Chen would have never met; the word ‘bad person’ would not have been written on my forehead.”
She said she moved out from Zhangs’ house because she has been accepted at another school and later only learned about Cecilia’s disappearance through the media.
“I couldn’t believe it happened”, said the young woman, “I told everybody that Cici’s family was a good family and it was impossible for them to have enemies.”
In her statement, the young woman also asked the public to stop criticizing Cecilia’s parents.
“They have already lost their lovely daughter and you are here to make up stories to condemn them, hurting them when they are in the most vulnerable moment. How many of you really understand them? How many of you have met them before?
“You have only heard of them through the media. Therefore you don’t have the right to denounce them.
“You can speculate but please consider the feelings of Cici’s parents.”
Visitors to the web site had mixed feelings about the young woman’s statement.
“I wish you would have told us the truth,” wrote a person in his message on the web site, “If Chen was really the killer, how come you didn’t know?”
“I don’t think she’s telling the truth”, another person said.
“Thank you for sharing your side of the story”, yet anther person wrote.
