The lives of two Indian PhD students in their prime was sniffed out on the campus of Louisiana State University on Thursday.
Chandrashekhar Reddy Komma from Andhra’s Kadapa district and Kiran Kumar Allam from the state’s Karim Nagar district were found dead in Allam’s apartment late in what police describe as a case of home invasion.
The double murder came to light when Allam’s pregnant wife sought medical help after finding her husband and his friend in a pool of blood, both had been shot in the head once.
Komma had been bound by a computer cable and Allam’s body was found near the entry door.
Back in India, the families of the two students are in shock. Allam’s father is on his way to Louisiana.
”I had just spoken to him this morning. He was sounding great,” said Rajaiah Allam, Kiran Kumar’s father.
Louisiana state police say that three men were seen leaving the area near Allam’s apartment around the time of the incident. The motive behind the gruesome murder is unclear.
The police say that there were no signs of a forced entry but university officials say that the two students were specifically targetted.
”It appeared to have been specifically targeted towards the two individuals involved, for reasons unknown and undetermined at this particular moment. This is a tragic incident,” said Sean O’Keefe, Chancellor, Louisiana State University.
”One that, again, appears to have no early preliminary indication here as to any reasoning for it. Nonetheless, regardless of circumstance, it is of epic proportions in terms of tragedy,” he added.
Thursday night’s incident brought back memories of the massacre at Virginia Tech University in April this year when a gunman opened fire killing 33 people including an Indian professor.
What may be a factor in the investigations into the double murder at Louisiana State is that apartment in which the two students were killed, is located very close to an area known for its high crime rate.
