Ontario’s new guardian of public safety wants to rally a National Guard-style force of volunteers to help out in case of emergencies like Sept. 11.
Bob Runciman, yesterday named minister of public safety and security, said he’d like to see retired doctors, nurses, firefighters and police become active in times of need. Those volunteers would essentially take over day-to-day operations while the full-time emergency workers concentrated on a major crisis.
CIVILIAN ROLE
“This would be more of a support response in the case of an emergency,” he said.
Runciman stressed it would be a civilian rather than military-style guard.
Runciman’s portfolio is one of the new larger ministries bringing together the old postings of solicitor general, correctional services.
